Lane Public Library Organization for Service

All authority for the Lane Public Library system resides within the Board of Trustees, as a whole. The Board's responsibilities include: employ and/or dismiss the Director/Clerk-Treasurer and approve appointments of the staff; establish written policy; provide and maintain facilities; develop the library's plan of service and determine hours of operation.

The LPL system has 3 locations to make library services accessible throughout the area. The locations are:

Main Library
300 N. 3rd Street
Hamilton, OH 45011
Fairfield Lane Library
1485 Corydale Drive
Fairfield, OH 45014
Oxford Lane Library
15 S. College Ave.
Oxford, OH 45056

The purpose of the bookmobile is to enable the library to directly serve a larger portion of the service district. The bookmobile serves public and parochial schools, nursing homes, daycare centers and makes community stops. The bookmobile circulates both juvenile and adult materials.

Each Lane Library is organized into departments to carry out the service operations. Departments include:

Children's and Young Adult Services - These departments are responsible for Children's and Young Adult reference and reader's advisory services, and children's and young adults' programs, such as story hours, classroom visits and library tours.

Circulation Services - This department is responsible for lending of all library materials. Other responsibilities include the registration of borrowers and supervision of pages.

Information Services - This department is responsible for reference and reader's advisory services and for instructing patrons in the use of the library's catalog and computer resources.

George C. Cummins Room - This department is part of Information Services at the Main Library. It features a collection of local history and genealogical materials, including an extensive photographic collection of Butler County. The Cummins Room materials do not circulate and are for in-library use only.

William E. and Ophia D. Smith Library of Regional History - This department is part of the Oxford Branch and is housed in that facility. The Smith Library of Regional History opened in 1981. The Smiths' published works and personal papers formed the nucleus of the collection. Financial gifts from the Smith family helped to build this addition to the Oxford Branch. The Smith Library has materials on the history of the City of Oxford and surrounding townships; all of Butler County; Southwestern Ohio; and for some topics, the entire State of Ohio. General historical studies on the Old Northwest Territory and the Ohio River Valley are located here. All times periods are covered, but emphasis is placed on the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Systems- The department (located at Hamilton and Fairfield) operates and maintains the library's integrated computer system; trains staff and public in the use of the computer, provides documentation, reports and notices, and keeps current on systems enhancements, anticipating the automation needs of the library.

Technical Services- This department orders and prepares materials for use including classification, cataloging, maintaining the online database, processing materials, and sending items to the bindery.
